First Grade

Hello and welcome to first grade! My name is Mrs. Tammy Shepard and I will be your child’s teacher this year. I am very excited to be a part of the Fairview-Marguerite family!!

Prior to coming to Fairview-Marguerite, I taught twelve years for Cocke County Board of Education at Grassy Fork School and most recently at Centerview School. My experience includes teaching Kindergarten, a K/1 split, first grade, fifth grade Social Studies and Science, and RTI. In March, I accepted an interim position at Fairview-Marguerite in 5th grade for Mrs. Lawson while she was on maternity leave. In June, I was hired full time as a first grade teacher. I can’t say this enough, “I am filled with EXCITEMENT about having this opportunity to work at Fairview, with you and your child!!!!”

I want your child to have a smooth transition from Kindergarten into First grade. Last year, your child was learning about the letters and sounds and how to read CVC words (cat, let, sit, etc.), writing simple sentences, expanding his or her number sense and adding and subtracting numbers 0-5. This year, we will be developing our reading skills and strategies in order to become a fluent reader. We will be learning Dolch/Sight words that will increase our fluency and comprehension. Our number sense will expand to numbers from 0-120. We will be adding and subtracting fluently to and from 20 by the end of the year. We will also be expanding our vocabulary and sharpening our spelling patterns so we can apply the skills that are being learned in with our writing so we can develop better sentence structure (I like red. I like the red bicycle that I saw at Wal-Mart}.

As you can see, we are going to be working hard in first grade.  We will be sending home a weekly newsletter that will let you know what skills and strategies will be taught for the week.  It is very important for your child to practice his or her reading, Dolch/sight words, spelling words, and math facts nightly. Please do not spend more than 20-30 minutes on homework. You may want or need to break the minutes up into two- 10 or 15 minute sessions depending on your child’s needs. Also, your child will bring home a planner that will used as a communication tool between the parent and teacher. Please check and initial in the appropriate spot. Finally, your child will have a gold folder. One side will be for papers to “KEEP at HOME” and the other side will be for papers to be “RETURNED to SCHOOL.” Any money that is sent in should be placed in an envelope containing the following information: Child’s Name, Teacher’s Name, and a note for what the money is for. You will then get a receipt for your records.

If you would like to send your child an afternoon snack, you may. Please make sure it is in a container that your child can easily open, send a spoon if needed, and one that does not need refrigerating. Please do not send any peanut products due to allergies.

As I said at the beginning of this letter, I am very excited to be a part of the Fairview-Marguerite family and extremely excited to be your child’s teacher!
